Incidental finding of lymphoma after septoplasty.
IntroductionSeptoplasty, or surgical correction of the deviated septum, is an elective, routinely performed rhinologic procedure to address nasal airway obstruction. In many cases, resected septal cartilage and bone fragments are sent for pathologic review, although there is no consensus on this practice. We reported two cases of incidentally diagnosed lymphoma after elective septoplasty and discussed clinical presentation, diagnosis, and management.MethodsRetrospective chart review of two patients who underwent septoplasty at a tertiary academic medical center and found to have incidental lymphoma based on histopathology.ResultsTwo patients who underwent septoplasty had an incidental diagnosis of lymphoma on pathologic analysis. One patient was noted to have an S-shaped septal deviation that produced bilateral nasal obstruction. She underwent a difficult septoplasty, in which the mucoperichondrial flap was firmly adherent to the underlying septum and bone. Final pathology demonstrated diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. She was treated with chemoradiation and remained free of disease at 59 months. The other patient had a history of nasal trauma, which produced left septal deviation. He underwent an uncomplicated septoplasty, with pathology that demonstrated low-grade B-cell lymphoma. Because there was no evidence of active disease, the decision was made to not treat and to observe the patient clinically.ConclusionsThis is the first reported series of septal lymphoma incidentally diagnosed on routine septoplasty. Although histopathologic review of specimens from routine nasal and sinus surgery is not routinely performed, this report highlighted the importance of this process, on a case-by-case basis, in detecting unexpected malignancies that otherwise were clinically silent
Explainability in Simplicial Map Neural Networks
Simplicial map neural networks (SMNNs) are topology-based neural networks
with interesting properties such as universal approximation capability and
robustness to adversarial examples under appropriate conditions. However, SMNNs
present some bottlenecks for their possible application in high dimensions.
First, no SMNN training process has been defined so far. Second, SMNNs require
the construction of a convex polytope surrounding the input dataset. In this
paper, we propose a SMNN training procedure based on a support subset of the
given dataset and a method based on projection to a hypersphere as a
replacement for the convex polytope construction. In addition, the
explainability capacity of SMNNs is also introduced for the first time in this
paper
Millimagnitude Photometry for Transiting Extrasolar Planetary Candidates III: Accurate Radius and Period for OGLE-TR-111-b
We present accurate V-band photometry for a planetary transit of OGLE-TR-111
acquired with VIMOS at the ESO Very Large Telescope. The measurement of this
transit allows to refine the planetary radius, obtaining R_p= 1.01 +/- 0.06
R_J. Given the mass of M_p = 0.53 M_J previously measured from radial
velocities, we confirm that the density is rho_p= 0.6 +/- 0.2 g/cm^3. We also
revise the ephemeris for OGLE-TR-111-b, obtaining an accurate orbital period P=
4.014484 +/- 0.000014 days, and predicting that the next observable transits
would occur around December 2006, and after that only in mid-2008. Even though
this period is different from previously published values, we cannot yet rule
out a constant period.Comment: 16 pages (including figures), 5 figures, 1 table. Accepted for

Angular momentum effects in Michelson-Morley type experiments
The effect of the angular momentum density of a gravitational source on the
times of flight of light rays in an interferometer is analyzed. The calculation
is made imagining that the interferometer is at the equator of the gravity
source and, as long as possible, the metric, provided it is stationary and
axisymmetric, is not approximated. Finally, in order to evaluate the size of
the effect in the case of the Earth a weak field approximation is introduced.
For laboratory scales and non-geodesic paths the correction turns out to be
comparable with the sensitivity expected in gravitational waves interferometric
detectors, whereas it drops under the threshold of detectability when using
free (geodesic) light rays.Comment: 12 pages, LaTeX; more about the detection technique, references

Design and practical deployment of a network-centric remotely piloted aircraft system
Remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPASs) are gaining more are more relevance during the last decade since more applications are being enabled by lighter planes with increasing autonomy, higher ceilings, and more powerful transmission technologies. The integration of the RPAS as part of network-centric warfare would be a very important milestone to achieve because of the huge amount of information and capabilities that all these aircrafts can incorporate into the global scheme. This integration is easier for handheld (short-range) RPASs since their communications are typically based on digital transmission like WiFi or WiMAX, but it may not be as obvious for bigger RPASs (long-range, e.g., tactical or medium/high altitude systems) because their line of sight communications are frequently based on analog transmissions. This implies indirect integration into network-centric warfare by means of the ground control station (satellite communications, when available, may suffer notorious delay for certain applications). This article presents a recent practical experience, including flight test campaigns, deploying an all- IP communication architecture into one of the most relevant Spanish tactical RPASs, the SIVA, used by both the Spanish Army and the Spanish Air Force for the last 10 years. This deployment enables cost-effective integration of this RPAS (and its natural successor, the MILANO, a medium- altitude RPAS) into the network-centric warfare by means of direct TCP/IP transmissions over a long-range digital line of sight channel combined with satellite communications for beyond line of sight operations. The proposed design includes network-level security over the radio interfaces, automatic data link selection, support of remote video terminals, and access connectivity toward external IPv6 networks. This work has been partially granted by the Spanish Ministry of Defense through the DRONE project (DN8644-COINCIDENTE-10032110042).
